WHAT CREATES SPIN OF THE GOLF BALL?
WHAT DOES “SPIN”DO? First-spin creates lift. The
dimples on the ball are aerodynamically designed to help the ball lift and
go left or right. It is the spin
created by your swing and club face direction that makes the ball go up,
straight, slice or hook.
Spin that helps the ball get air and/or hit the green and “come
back” is done by hitting down the ball from top to bottom. As
the club travels downward, the ball rolls up the face. The club head
grooves (make sure they are clean) impart more friction spinning the ball
and making it rotate north to south. Then you ball a high trajectory
and when the ball lands the spin acts as a brake, grabbing the grass and
ground and stopping. The greater the compression on a properly struck
ball, the greater the spin. If green slope and conditions are perfect,
the ball will release backwards instead of forward. A softer covered
ball will also be easier to spin. A hard cover ball may tend to move
forward (roll out).
Questions to Ponder: How often do you carry the golf ball past the
pin? Do you want the ball to hit, release a little and stop? Do
you want to create a higher trajectory?
I think you get the gist of the question. Compression and spin are
necessary for solid hits, distance and distance control.
