TIDEWATER GOLF CLUB AND PLANTATION....PLAY TWO OF THE TOP EIGHTEEN HOLES IN MYRTLE BEACH ON ONE COURSE

(February 3, 2006) - Tidewater has a collection of eighteen of the finest holes you will play in Myrtle Beach. The par 3 third and the par 4 fourth were voted two of the top 18 holes in Myrtle Beach several years ago. Tidewater homeowners feel the eighteenth hole is one of the toughest finishing holes they have played anywhere, and I concur. The par four 5th hole is 455 yards from the silver (men’s regular) tees. This is a hole members usually feel good about when they post a four par. Come try to birdie or par this one; as, it requires two well struck shots to “get home”.

Tidewater was designed by Ken Tomlinson and opened for play in 1990. It then received awards from Golf Digest Magazine as the #1 new public course in America for 1990. Currently it is listed in Golf Digests Top 100 Public Course You Can Play in the United States and has been given a 4 ½ star rating by Golf Digest. This is a must play golf course for men and women on every trip to Myrtle Beach. Call for preferred tee-times early as Tidewater fills in quickly.

The professional staff led by head professional Chris Cooper is exceeded by none. Restaurant and snack bar service is superb. You must stop in to savor the delights offered by a varied menu. A full service bar includes all liquors, tap and bottled beer and soft drinks. Golf apparel of name brands is reasonably priced. The course has complimentary range balls during the peak season. Inquire in the pro shop at other times for details.

Mr. Tomlinson told me several years ago, he designed the course to make the par fives reachable in two shots from the silver tees and perhaps the gold. He emphasized that the par fours and par threes will be very challenging.

The key to playing and scoring at Tidewater is to be patient. There are opportunities to make birdies, but an errant shot can be very costly.

The large Tif Dwarf Bermuda greens are tricky, so watch for subtle breaks. There are subtle breaks. Several greens break toward the ocean as Tidewater is laid out between the ocean estuaries of Cherry Grove and the Intracoastal Waterway. The white sand similar to Augusta National can be firm, so be careful with your play getting out. Be smart with club selection as the large greens can call for more than a sand wedge from greenside brinkers. Fairway bunkers come into play on several holes catching errant shots. Beware of the first, second, fourth, eighth, eleventh and thirteenth holes in this regard. Water comes into play on holes three, six, eight, nine, ten, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, sixteen and eighteen. Forced carries are present on holes six, ten, fourteen, fifteen, seventeen and eighteen. Don’t forget, when a course is rated, wetlands and the surrounding marsh is considered water. For example, hole nine is considered to have water all along the left side and hole eighteen all along the right side. Although there is no out of bounds, per se at Tidewater, local players play balls hit into homeowner’s yards as a lateral hazard. If you have played Tidewater you know the homes are set at least fifty to sixty feet from the cart paths and blend into the natural setting.

Tidewater is my home course and I never get tired of playing it. You will love the experience, as I do everyday. Get a view of the Cherry Grove channel homes, river and ocean, from holes thirteen, twelve, three and four. Hawks, Ospreys, Egrets, Herons and Ibis are appealing. Look for the Osprey nest near the green on sixteen.

A few things to note:
I’m told new cement cart paths are coming this summer. If there is one improvement to be made at Tidewater, it’s the tee boxes. The tee boxes are being addressed. At present, the greens are running at least a nine and they are rolling great. Fairways are green and lush, and the rough is usually kept at 1 to 1 ½ inches high.

Please consider that the fairways are lush and soft. Roll can be none to little. The yardage you see to play is usually all carry. In effect, this lengthens the course. Pace of play is generally 5 hours as this course has seven miles of cart path. It is worth every moment of your time. What’s the rush! You’re on vacation.

Come play us…You’ll love it
