Spin that helps the ball get air and/or hit the green and “come back” is done by hitting down the ball from top to bottom. As the club travels downward, the ball rolls up the face....

Golf Course Reviews
Course Review: Indigo Creek Offers Quality, Value - The marsh and wetland areas remain, reminders of the rice plantation that called the grounds home centuries ago. The scattered vestiges of life in Lowcountry South Carolina – giant oak trees and ambling streams chief among them - provide ample character, but golf has taken center stage at Indigo Creek...
Woodland Valley Country Club - A few miles west on route 9 from US 17 is Woodland Valley Country Club. Old timers and frequent players will remember the course being called Diamond Back. Its entrance was noted by a fearsome rattle snake on the billboard that denoted the entrance. That billboard is gone now and replaced with a very classy sign...
Bald Head Island Golf Club - The other day this average Joe golfer went to Southport, NC to play Bald Head Island Golf Club, through the courtesy of Myrtle Beach Golf Directors. If you are not familiar with this course and are looking for a different kind of golfing experience you should give Bald Head Island Club a shot. The course is on North Carolina’s southernmost cape island...
Leopard's Chase wins two new awards - Myrtle Beach is home to some of the best golf in the world and it just got a little better. Famed architect Tim Cate has unleashed the newest of his “Big Cat” themed courses. Leopard’s Chase. It has come out with a roar all its’ own. Golf Digest has recently added Leopard’s Chase to its list of “Top 10 Best New Public Courses in America”. Not too shabby. And, if that weren’t enough, Golf Magazine just added Leopard’s Chase to its list of “Ten Best New Courses You Can Play”...
Jones Course at Sea Trail - The first decision the Hackers had to make is which of the three course at Sea Trail to play - the Jones, Maples, or Byrd courses. Through the courtesy of Myrtle Beach Golf Directors, the Hackers had the opportunity to play and review the Jones Course at Sea Trail.
The second decision the Hackers’ had to make is which route to take from the North Myrtle Beach area. I suggest you make is easy on the driver....
Leopard's Chase - Just opened in spring 2007, Leopards Chase is the fourth of “The Big Cats” courses at Ocean Ridge. Tiger’s Eye, Panther’s Run & Lions Paw are the other three. It is also the first course to open along the Grand Strand in six years.
Also note that Leopard’s Chase is not Angles Trace re-worked. That course will become another “Big Cat” and will be named Jaguar's Lair...
Meadowlands Golf Club - Meadowlands, by the way, is tucked neatly in the Calabash area of NC. Head North on US 17 out of North Myrtle Beach to route 179 in North Carolina, hang a left and follow the signs to Meadowlands. I’ve played Meadowlands numerous times so this review is easy to do.
Meadowlands as its name implies is a wide open course for the most part. The number one hole is a par four of 379 yards from the white tees looks invitingly easy; just hit it down the middle. Get off to a good start, because the front nine plays a lot tougher then the back on this course...
Heather Glen Golf Links - When our foursome finally got to play this 27 hole award winning golf course, the weather was still iffy. But, despite that, we headed north on Hwy 17, crossed over the Intracoastal Waterway bridge, continued through the historic Little River fishing village and found Heather Glen is on the left - just a bit north of the Little River community and just on the south side of the North Carolina/South Carolina state line....
Long Bay Golf Club - The Long Bay Golf Club is located off Route 9 in Longs, South Carolina. A pleasing entry passes you by the 13th hole a three par island green. Many private homes are being built and you will see that as you approach the bag drop where we were greeted by Bill and a well experienced bag attendant Coach Eddie. The service by the attendants and food and beverage personnel were exemplary. Dave Austin greeted us cordially and made our entry efficiently and pleasant...
The New and Improved Palmetto Greens Golf and C.C. - Palmetto Greens G.C. formerly known as Colonial Charters has had a breathtaking facelift over the past couple of years. Colonial Charters closed in 2006 not knowing what was in store except a major overhaul by designer Rick Robbins. Palmetto Greens emerged as a fresh breath of golf for members and is on its way to being one of the best courses in the Myrtle Beach area. Accepting public play beginning March 13, 2008...
Shaftesbury Glen - The last few weeks, the Average Joes have been playing some great courses but they have been links style, no trees, plenty of sand and SUN. The hot weather and sun had just about burned us out so we looked forward to trees and some shade. The Myrtle Beach Golf Directors did a great job of finding Shaftsbury Glen for us.
From the North Myrtle Beach area, Shaftsbury Glen is just a 30 minute drive or so to SC route 905, two miles west (towards Conway) from the Conway bypass...
Thistle Golf Club - Today we headed towards Thistle to play a round of golf set up for us by Myrtle Beach Golf Directors. From North Myrtle Beach, take 17 N to Calabash NC route 179. Thistle is located just a couple of miles East of Calabash.
When you get to the entrance be sure to have your tee time made as a friendly gate guard will ask you for name and tee times.
The course is designed to present a distinct Scottish links feel, with wind-swept fairways, large bentgrass greens and surrounding hillsides covered in heather and wild flowers...
Thistle Golf Club - Thistle Golf club can be planned as your first golf round in the North Myrtle Beach, South North Carolina golf area. Three nines of Scottish style link golf located in the historic quaint fishing village of Calabash, N.C. has been given a 4 ½ star rating by Golf Digest Magazine. Thistle Golf Club boasts magnificently rolling bent grass greens, lush Bermuda fairways meandering around fairway bunkers and lakes and golf eighteen holes in about four hours at a leisurely pace. My foursome played the Thistle West and South course in 4 hours five minutes with a brief stop at the turn...
Tigers Eye at Ocean Ridge - The Average Joe foursome played Tigers Eye at Ocean Ridge Plantation last week.
Tigers Eye is part of the Big Cats courses at Ocean Ridge Plantation. Tigers Eye is easy to get to from North Myrtle Beach. It is just nine miles north of the South Carolina border on route 17. Though not the newest of the Big Cat courses it is one of their best. ...
New greens at TPC of Myrtle Beach - TPC of Myrtle Beach has received many honors since its opening in 1999. It was recently awarded a five-star rating by Golf Digest, the only course on the Grand Strand and one of just seventeen in the United States to receive that perfect rating. In an effort to continuously improve the facility, the owners developed a plan to renovate the greens and greenside bunkers, along with many improvements to the clubhouse...
The New and Improved Palmetto Greens Golf and C.C. - Palmetto Greens is a brand spanking new course in the North Myrtle Beach area. It opened to the public on April 14th.
Well…it’s not quite “spanking new” – it is a redesign of the Colonial Charters Golf Course. While not complete just yet, its potential is off the charts. The people at Palmetto Green told us they are aware that fine tuning still needs to be done, and they have very definite plans to upgrade this course to a premium one....
Tidewater Golf Club and Plantation - Tidewater has a collection of eighteen of the finest holes you will play in Myrtle Beach. The par 3 third and the par 4 fourth were voted two of the top 18 holes in Myrtle Beach several years ago. Tidewater homeowners feel the eighteenth hole is one of the toughest finishing holes they have played anywhere, and I concur. The par four 5th hole is 455 yards from the silver (men’s regular) tees. This is a hole members usually feel good about when they post a four par. Come try to birdie or par this one; as, it requires two well struck shots to “get home”...
Wild Wing Golf and Plantation - I haven’t visited Wild Wing in more than two years. It boasted four great golf courses and an outstanding practice facility. Now it consists of the 18 hold Avocet course and a new 9 holer redoing the Hummingbird course. This is not the same Hummingbird of years past in it entirety. Todd, a golf assistant, informed me of the new nine holes as follows...
Heather Glen Golf Links - Fourteen years ago golf history was made on hole 4 of the white nine. Jim Whelehon from Rochester New York scored 2 holes in one on this hole using the same ball and some club on two consecutive rounds of golf. There were no holes in one today. I played with two friends from Tidewater, Steve Cohn and Tony Brevetti who joined me on the men's regular tees. It was a breezy warm day, with a high of 81 degrees. We met the lead professional of Heather Glen, Steve Heher, who informed me....
