Carolina native and leading PGA TOUR professional Davis Love, III, winner of the 1997 PGA Championship may have solidified his reputation as a course designer with his newest creation at Barefoot Resort. Davis was determined to build a course that was unique, visually striking and fun to play. The course even incorporates a replica of ruins from and antebellum plantation house similar to ruins found throughout the Lowcountry.
Playing just 265 yards from the men’s tees, this is the reachable par 4 you long hitters have been waiting for. If going for the green it is ok to miss right or left in order to avoid the green side bunkers, either way you are look at a challenging second shot to the elevated green. If you hit your second shot long there is a good chance your ball will bounce favorably of the ruins located along the back of the green.
Maybe because it’s just a good looking hole with risk and reward, but probably because I’ve gotten that lucky bounce off the ruins more than once (one time the ball stopped within 6 inches of the hole), the 4th hole at Barefoot Resorts Love course is my favorite hole.

There are many reasons that the Davis Love course is always ranked as one of the best courses on the Grand Strand, and the Par 3 9th hole is one of them. The hole plays 187 yards from the men’s tee’s to an elevated green. Accuracy is definitely more important than distance on this shot. A very big landing area in front of the green allows for a shot that does not quite reach the green. From here it’s an easy pitch onto the green. The green itself is huge, with not much undulation.
Now for the trouble: There is a waste bunker on the right, and any farther right than the bunker is death. The left side is a little more forgiving with some room to miss, but not much. The landscaping around this hole makes this hole one of the most scenic on the course. Shrubs, sawgrass, and large pine trees behind the green frame this hole perfectly.

The 18th at the Love is sure to settle some bets. This 560-yard dogleg left, par 5 is one of the best finishing holes in Myrtle Beach. From the tee, you cannot see the green or most of the trouble that is along the left side that really juts into the fairway more than you know. The drive is not very demanding, but deserves quite a bit of attention. Too far right, and 560 yards turns into 590. The second shot must carry the environmentally protected area and still favor the right side to set up for the third shot. If the second shot is too far to the left there is not only a waste bunker to contend with for your third, but also a bunker guarding the green and water just off the fringe of the green. The third shot into the green is visually great with the clubhouse behind. It should only be about 140 yards, but is tougher than you might think. Anything left, long or short, will cost you at least one stroke. The green is settled between a huge pond on the left and a good sized hill on the right. Most shots hit to the right side of the green will kick left and bounce near or onto the green.
If you make a birdie here, take your money with satisfaction. There is a story behind this hole: Davis Love originally designed the hole with the green where it is now. However, when constructed, the green was perched on top of the hill to the right. Davis came out to play the first round on his course, and while people watched prior to his second shot into the green, they could see that he and his partner pointing to different locations around the green. Davis finished the hole and demanded the green be moved to the original location, at the bottom of the hill, next to the water. This move in construction cost tens of thousands of dollars to fix.
